SEO Ranking Case Study: From 0 to Page 1 in 90 Days

The exact SEO playbook a client used to go from zero traffic to ranking page 1 for their main keyword in 90 days. Budget, timeline, and the mistakes that almost killed the project.

Starting point (Day 0)

The client came to us in January 2026 with a 4-year-old WordPress site, no SEO history, Google Business Profile unclaimed, zero content beyond the basic "About / Services / Contact" structure. Their competitors in Bucharest were running established practices with 5+ years of SEO investment.

The audit revealed: Core Web Vitals failing all 3 metrics, no schema markup, title tags all identical ("Welcome to Dental Clinic"), 800 words of total content, 0 backlinks of any quality.

The 90-day plan

Month 1: Technical foundation (€900)

  • Fixed Core Web Vitals (upgraded hosting, image optimization, removed bloated plugins)
  • Added schema markup: LocalBusiness, MedicalOrganization, Dentist
  • Rewrote all title tags with target keywords
  • Optimized meta descriptions for CTR
  • Claimed and optimized Google Business Profile
  • Submitted to Google Search Console, generated sitemap
  • Fixed mobile responsive issues

Month 2: Content sprint (€1200)

  • Created 10 new service pages with 800+ words each
  • Wrote 6 blog articles targeting local intent keywords
  • Added case studies with before/after photos
  • Built FAQ section with 30+ questions + FAQPage schema
  • Added team pages with photos and credentials

Month 3: Authority building (€700)

  • Submitted to 15 local directories (backlinks DR 40-70)
  • Outreach to local health publications for mentions
  • Encouraged 40 happy patients to leave Google reviews
  • Cross-linking internally between service pages
  • Weekly content updates to signal freshness

The 3 mistakes that almost killed the project

  1. Targeting the head term first. We initially targeted "stomatolog bucuresti" — way too competitive for a new site. Pivoted to long-tail (sector + specialty) in week 3.
  2. Buying cheap backlinks. Week 4 we tested a $50 backlink package. Ruined domain trust for 2 weeks. Only legitimate outreach worked.
  3. Ignoring GMB. Google Business Profile turned out to be 40% of total organic leads. We prioritized it late (week 6). Should have been week 1.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it realistically take to rank on page 1 of Google?

For competitive head terms: 6-12 months minimum. For low-competition long-tail keywords: 30-90 days. The 90-day case study in this article ranks for a long-tail keyword with difficulty score 28 — not a head term. Expectations matter.

What is the minimum budget to rank on page 1 in 90 days?

For long-tail keywords: $500-2000 in content investment + $500-2000 in backlink outreach. $3000-4000 total is the realistic minimum for quality work. DIY with your own time substitutes for the content budget but not the backlink outreach.

Can you rank without backlinks in 2026?

For very low-competition long-tail keywords: yes, on-page SEO + technical SEO can be enough. For anything competitive: no, backlinks remain the strongest ranking signal in 2026. Plan for 10-50 quality backlinks during the first 90 days.

What ranking metrics should I track?

Average position (where you rank for target keywords), impressions (how often you show up), click-through rate (CTR), clicks. Track these in Google Search Console. For competitor comparison, use Ahrefs or SemRush.
